Lane Kiffin aka Nick Saban aka Larry Brown

OK so this is the first topic we are gunna discuss and it could not be a hotter debate. How much of an asshole is lane kiffin? I want to start by saying i have no bias at all. none. i dont care about him, tennessee or usc. What i do care about is the reputation of college football (which isnt very good at the moment). College football has been struggling from my point of view. the BCS is bullshit, and there is always an argument about who is really number 1. does that happen in any other sport.... NO. because in every other sport u have a playoff. my second problem with college football is its overall focus. winning is everything and ncaa is making a fortune... but thats a whole different topic. Brings me to our topic today, which is lane kiffin. Before we get started lets get something straight. College football is a business, a competitive business. enough said.

So Lane Kiffin.... heres your report card

What is legit: Lane, your going back to where it really started for you, and i get it. USC is in a better place with better recruits, a better team, a better job. Hands down. dont argue it. thats the way it is. not tryn to take the thunder away from the Vols, but lets get serious. 7 straight pac ten titles. a few national championships and Heismans here and there. if i were in your shoes id jump at the opportunity to go back to the school that made me a "legit" coach. especially USC.

The Foul Play: You have been a total asshole in the sec. Talking trash about Meyer wasnt smart. Promising a victory over a team (florida) that was clearly stronger, smarter, quicker, and just overall better (maybe cause they were the best team in the nation) wasnt the smartest decision. 8 recruiting violations.... with at least 4 more pending, doesnt make you look so hot. It makes you look like a down right cheater which you may as well be but i wont accuse you without proof. you have a multi year deal that lasts just over one season... jump out of your seat and run out the door like the fire alarm went off.

My Overall Grade
B+
There arent many people that wouldnt take the usc job with your identical backgroud. I know i wouldn't. but just get ready lane. USC is on the verge of ncaa reprimand after questionable recruiting strategies (sound familiar?). yes lane its called CHEATING. Yes pete carroll wasnt found guilty of any serious violations, but he sure bolted from the throne of college football as fast as Calipari did in memphis. you made the right career move but you didnt deserve it. 5 n 15 in the pros and 7 n 6 with an embarrassing bowl loss in college is not a good resume. ITS AN AWFUL ONE. Bobby bowden is 375 - 129 and he won 21 bowl games at fsu AND GOT FIRED. at your pace lane u wouldnt have that many wins until mid season 2067.
But lane you played the field. you sleezed your way into this position without earning it so congrats. i guess the biggest loser is USC today, but with those recruits, everyone will win but Tennessee

  1. Until we figure out how to co-manage this blog I'll comment here. I completely agree with you about Kiffin expect I think Tennessee will be better off without him in the long run. He can recruit but yes, but his players have no discipline (see recent arrests of freshmen) and UT would of been on probabtion within a year or two if Kiffin stayed.

Tennessee is better off going after a Peyton Manning's former coach at UT David Cutcliffe who is currently turning around Duke or U of Texas coach in waiting Will Muschamp. Muschamp has been promised the head job at Texas but when will Mack Brown retire? His contract currently runs through 2016 and Muschamp may not want to wait around that long. For the way Kiffin is talked about you would have thought he has won something as a head coach in his career.

Kiffin was basically born on third base without hitting a triple. He father, Monte, whom he is also taking to USC is a legendary defensive coordinator who invented the Tampa 2 defense. Yet Monte has never gotten the opportunities that Lane has gotten.

USC made the quick hire of Kiffin to save a recruiting class that was falling apart after Carroll departed for Seattle. Kiffin and maybe even more importantly assistant Ed Orgeron, are very good recruiting and in college football talents obviously wins.

Watching Kiffin's tenure at SC will be fascinating but I wouldn't bet on it turning out well.

  2. Big question on espn is who will be more successful? Pete Carroll at Seatle? or Kiffin at USC? what are your thoughts

  3. Tough question but I'd have to go with Kiffin at USC because it will be easy for him to recruit elite high school talent. For reasons he may or may not have anything to do with, elite high school talent will want to play at Southern Cal.

Carroll is no longer in a position that uses his biggest strength, his ability to recruit. In the NFL you draft and develop players that all other 31 teams have the ability to grab (sometimes before you do). Seattle also has an aging QB in Hasselbeck that needs to be replaced. It takes time in the NFL to develop a young QB unless you already have a good team around him to cover up for his mistakes and weaknesses (see Ravens, Jets). At this point and time Seattle does that have that type of support around whomever they decide to draft.

  4. I want to argue with you but i cant. USC is a powerhouse. and possibly the best football program in the past decade. You take a guy like carroll and replace him with kiffin who has almost the same strengths in recruiting. His team is always going to be better skill-wise and athletically. That wins 9-10 games a year if not more. Carroll did it so why cant lane? that being said i really do like where the seahawks are going with Pete Carroll. Hes energetic and savy. he has the football smarts as well as the personality that can deal with the issues the NFL brings. He brings a lot to a dieing franchise and he has almost all the power.
However... the nfl is the toughest professional sports league in this country to succeed in quickly and consistently. Great coaches are shown the door year in and year out because they arent succeeding quick enough or consistently. Coaches like Marty Schottenheimer, John Gruden, and Mike Shanahan are living proof. They deserve to keep their jobs but they dont. Even tho Pete has signed a 5 year deal, that doesnt mean he will be there for 5. especially if he goes sour and produces 7 wins in 2 years which isnt unlikely.
How are we to grade success between these two coaches. We cant do it on wins and losses. I think for kiffin to be successful he has to win 10 games a year, pac 10, and rose bowls. Its a lot to ask from a loser from Minnesota. If Carroll wins up to 8 games in a season in the next 3 years with a possible playoff birth, i think he keeps his job, and wins this debate

  5. I fucking hate lane kiffin and the fact he gets paid so much money for being so terrible at something. 12-20 as a head coach, enough said. he cant do shit but look pretty on camera and convince sexy bitches to lure recruits to his school. how awful was tennessee this year? fuck him.

  6. well he is 5 n 15 as an nfl coach with the god awful raiders... 7 n 6 with the vols but made it to the highest paying non bcs bowl in what was a very terrible showing. But to give him some credit he has a future in coaching, a very bright one. he has made it this far so who knows what will happen. He has a Trojans hat, a campus like USC's, and the resolve to get the best players in the country to play under him. It will be interesting

  8. Lane Kiffin has defended his aggressive recruiting strategy and overall demeanor at Tennessee as a necessary action in order to "bring energy back to Tennessee football." Now that he is at a high energy top notch football school, do you think he will take a more classy approach to his coaching, or is this going to be the same Kiffin regime that caused so much hostility in the SEC?

  9. Any opinions on whether the last touchdown scored by Minnesota was in poor taste?
